Gmail Closing in Germany

Google Inc. is unhappy with proposed German legislation to ban anonymous e-mail accounts and may consider dropping the German version of its Gmail service.

"This whole initiative is a bad idea," a spokesman for Google in Germany said Monday.

The draft bill would require ISPs (Internet service providers) and providers of e-mail service to collect and store customer data that security officials could access if necessary.

In an interview with the German weekly business magazine Wirtschaftswoche, Google's Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleischer was quoted saying that if the German government passes its proposed Internet surveillance legislation into law, "if need be, we will switch off Google Mail in Germany."

Worlds Top 10 Most Irritating Words

Ever wondered what are the most profitable keywords ?
Every webmaster thinks on it, but what about the irritating ones?

According to Daily Telegraph,

It is the driving force behind what some experts have hailed a golden age in the development of the English language.

But while the internet may be responsible for the greatest blossoming of new phrases since Shakespeare it has also been blamed for some of the most irritating.

Now a poll has revealed the web-related words that drive most computer users up the wall. "Folksonomy" was voted the most annoying new phrase in a survey to mark the 10th anniversary of the word "web-log".

The YouGov poll, in which 2,000 web users voted for their least favourite word spawned by the internet, celebrates the second annual Blooker Prize, which honours the year's best "blook", or book based on a blog. The 10 most irksome words spawned by the internet:

1. Folksonomy: an ad hoc online classification system
2. Blogosphere: the collective term for the online blogging community
3. Blog: an online journal or web-log
4. Netiquette: internet etiquette
5. Blook: a book based on a blog
6. Webinar: an online seminar
7. Vlog: a video blog

Online Marketing via YouTube : Latest SEO concept

Use YouTube (Ranked one of the World's top 10 site) to Advertise on the www :

According to PCWorld, More than 100 million videos viewed each day, tens of millions of unique visitors, one of the top sites on the Internet and so on.

So, you've probably watched YouTube videos. But have you ever uploaded your own creation? Probably not.

According to the Web-audience measuring service Hitwise Pty., only 0.16 percent of U.S. visitors to YouTube uploaded videos in a recent week. The rest are just watching.

How to market online via youtube ?:

If you're in a small company, or a larger one that doesn't want to mess with video hosting and access issues, YouTube provides a free, easy way to host corporate video. What kind of video?

1. Executive presentations. Executives at many companies provide regular presentations to department groups or even the entire workforce, to discuss financial performance, share information, recognize outstanding workers and so on. While the bulk of the audience may be at headquarters, many others may be in remote offices. Or a lot of workers may be absent the day of the presentation or unable to attend for other reasons. Videotape the highlights of the presentation and put them on YouTube, and they can be viewed by everyone who is authorized to do so. More on that later.

2. Training. Videos can be a great way to train workers on anything from using software and setting up equipment to making a great sales pitch. It's easy to use screen-capture utilities, for example, to show users how to master a new software package, complete with mouse clicks and different screen displays.

3. Help. Does your help desk get repeat calls from users requesting assistance on the same problem? "Now, how do I turn off my 'out of office' message, again?" Videotape the correct steps to solve the most common problems, and build up a bank of self-help videos for users to check first. Of course, knowing users, the help desk would probably begin fielding a lot of calls like: "Now, how do I access those help videos, again?"

4. Marketing. A picture is worth a thousand words, and thousands of pictures streamed together at 29.97 frames per second is worth a lot more. Show off that new shiny hardware to prospective customers or demonstrate that new software and provide product data, statistics or any other information you choose.

5. Events. Computerworld recently held a 40th anniversary party at which the founder regaled the audience with hilarious tales of the old days when he started the company. It was held in a spectacular venue high above Boston Harbor on a perfect spring day. It's a shame everyone in the company couldn't be there to see it, but being able to watch it afterward would be the next best thing. And it would be great if those who were there could watch the highlights again.

Media Entertainment and Online Spending

Ever wondered how India spends as compared to overall world ?

According to Business Standard,

The country is set to emerge as the fastest growing market in the global entertainment and media space in the next five years with a size of over Rs 1,00,000 crore by 2011, a study says.Driven by a sharp growth in the digital media space, as well as the traditional segments like TV, radio and films, the global E&M industry will grow at a compound annual rate of 6.4% to $2 trillion in the same period, global consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers said in its study. While identifying Asia-Pacific as the fastest-growing region, PwC said the rapid growth in this region would be led by India and China."India will be the fastest growing (country) over the next five years at 18.5% CAGR while China will continue to record double-digit annual gains that will average 16.8% CAGR," it said. The global outlook projects Indian E&M industry revenue at Rs 1,20,871 crore in 2011, against Rs 51,715 crore in 2006, Timmy S Kandhari, executive director, PwC told PTI.Internet advertising is expected to emerge as the fastest growing segment over the next five years, driven by the growing number of internet users, Kandhari said. The average spending in Asia Pacific would be at 9.6%, the fastest for any region, moving up to $470 billion in 2011 from $297 billion in 2006.Interestingly, the report noted that the US, the largest market in the world, would grow at the slowest pace."The US remains the largest but slowest growing market at 5.3% CAGR to $754 billion by 2011."

Hopefully good days for Search Engine Optimization and Marketing.

PayPal Bank : New from Ebay

PayPal, eBay's online payment service is set to make a mark in the banking and finance sector too. It not only enjoys the attachment with all the ebay transactions but now it as a Banking License in Europe (from Luxembourg bank authority).

We know major credit and debit cards on eBay's shopping sites are accepted only through PayPal.

In a strange ratio with that of eBay that shows PayPal's first-quarter revenue grew 31%, to $439 million, at a time when eBay's core shopping business grew just 23% and active buyers and sellers grew 10%.

In case of online transaction competition, PayPal's main rivals for online dollars are Visa, MasterCard (MA), American Express (AXP), and the banks that issue their cards. Today PayPal has a 143 million accounts while Visa has more than a billion.

EBay does accept major credit and debit cards on its shopping sites -- but only through PayPal.

Google Checkout has something to think about considered the growing and consistent popularity of PayPal through years and the trust it owns from webmasters around the world.

Another news that Ebay is taking off its adds from Google network in US shows a less impact to its overall visitors.

According to Bill Tancer, a research analyst at Hitwise, the internet research firm, said that eBay’s decision to pull all its advertising from Google in the US had had only a small impact on the “traffic” flowing from the search engine to the online auctioneer’s site. Some 9.6 per cent of eBay visitors came from Google on Tuesday, the first full day that the boycott was in effect, compared with 10.6 per cent on the previous Tuesday.

eBay's new online payments system is not very far from new secure pay systems and a debit card too!!

Advertising in Video : New Adsense like Model

How to advertise in Videos with relevancy ?

Video search engine Blinkx is putting the final touches on a new advertising platform for Web video code-named Project Trilby. When it launches next Monday it will be called blinkx AdHoc. It will offer media companies and video sites a way to place targeted ads alongside (or even in) Web videos based on the specific words spoken in the videos, as well as their overall context.

Web video advertising is the fastest-growing segment online, yet nobody really knows how to make those ads as relevant as search ads. Blinkx CEO Suranga Chandratillake says:

You need something akin to AdSense for video, which is what we have built.

Blinkx already indexes more than 12 million hours of video on the Web, and makes it searchable via speech-to-text and clustering technologies. Now, with AdHoc/Project Trilby any large Web video producer will be able to send their videos to blinkx to be indexed so that when somebody watches that video a targeted ad can be triggered.

Building an advertising platform for Web video is smart, but blinkx is not alone. Competitor EveryZing is trying to offer a similar service, and who knows what Google has up its sleeves?

Just like Google's AdSense matches search ads with the words on any given publisher's Web page, blinkx will bring a similar form of contextual mapping to video. An advertiser can buy keywords, and the ads will be triggered when those words are spoken in a video or they appear in a title, description or a tag attached to the video. The ads can be delivered right back on the publisher's site selected from their own inventory, that of an ad network, or from blinkx.

Yahoo!, the No. 2 search firm that has struggled in its battle with Google, said Monday that Terry Semel was out as chief executive officer, to be succeeded by Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang.

Yahoo's stock has been flat while Google's shares have risen more than sixfold since Google's IPO in August 2004.

Wall Street cheered the moves, but some online advertising industry experts said Yahoo's new management team still faces tough challenges.

Semel, who joined Yahoo chairman and CEO in May 2001, will stay on as non-executive chairman. But Semel has come under pressure from investors in the past year as the company has fallen further behind top rival Google in the online advertising market.

Shares of Yahoo surged 3 percent in heavy trading on Nasdaq Monday as speculation mounted that Semel might step down - and the stock rallied another 4 percent in after-hours trading.

Wall Street seemed to welcome the promotion of Yang since he is viewed as being far more tech-savvy than Semel, who had a background in traditional media before joining Yahoo.

Google in Political - Public Policy Support

Everyone was there except Google,
Its the politics and the social space. But now its open for all... checkout this news on Google's Policy Blog

According to PCMAG

The technology industry has always been quick to champion or condemn certain legislative initiatives, and Google on Monday added its two cents to topics like net neutrality and immigration with the launch of a new blog dedicated to public policy.

Google started the public policy blog internally in April "to limber up our blogging muscles," Andrew McLaughlin, director of public policy and government affairs, wrote on the site.

The search engine giant has touched on policy issues on its official Google blog in recent months, with posts about its executives testifying on Capitol Hill or presidential candidate visits to Google's California campus.

Future posts will likely touch on issues like net neutrality, censorship, innovation regulation, immigration, R&D, national security, and trade.

What you believe ? Is Google learning from MySpace how to enter into indirect politics or is it an honest social service ? Or is it the migrants issue thats making waves around ?

World's First Windows Online Desktop : Made in India

Indians have done it Again !!

According to the news by The Hindu,
Bangalore: The Web is where it is all happening — or so we are told by Internet pundits. The applications that we use on our desktop or laptop personal computers will eventually all migrate to the Web, they say. Indeed, players such as Google already offer their users the ability to create and save documents and presentations entirely through a browser. But it's still something happening piece-meal and in driblets.

Now, a Delhi-based start-up, fuelled by the creative efforts of a dozen young Indian programmers, has boldly gone where no major player has gone before — and has just announced the "world's first Windows-based online desktop." It's called Nivio and helps one to create a full-fledged, but entirely virtual, desktop of one's own — on the Web.

After the free-use period that might extend to year-end, Nivio will be offered on a monthly subscription of Rs.399 — with a 50 per cent discount. The beta version can be accessed at www.nivio.com after a registration procedure.

Community Site Orkut Physically Targetted in India

In the case of latest Hack and penetration into your computer, some cyber cafe's are facing a strange experience. Google's Social Marketing site Orkut is forcefully blocked using some script with a message like this with sound!

I asked a cafe owner and according to him people do come and put in the code personally. Its not publicly claimed that this act is by whom, but one thing is for sure, it will be creating more problems atleast in earning and formatting the PCs.

This seems to be a virus developed in VB, which collects the character values of these 5 ( o r k u t) and not let users use it anywhere in the browser.

Lets see if Google comes out with the Anti-Virus Solution to save his own Orkut....

Please let me know your views on this and how we can manage everything peacefully without hurting any one's sentiments.

“There is always a shortage of blood. Many a times, surgeries have been held up as there is shortage of negative (rare) blood groups,” said the Nagpur-based Poacha.

Google Vs Microsoft : Apple Wins on WWW

Who's winning the slap fight between Microsoft and Google? Perhaps Apple.

First, a recap. After software giant Microsoft complained about search kingpin Google's planned $3.1 billion purchase of online advertising company DoubleClick, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission opened a probe last month. Score one for Bill Gates.

Now Google is complaining to the U.S. Justice Department that the built-in desktop search features of Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista, hinder a competing product from Google. While the feds aren't biting, attorneys general in several states are now promising to look into the practice. Chalk one up for Google.

Apple's Steve Jobs, meanwhile, is free to do things Microsoft can only dream of doing--and Google's Eric Schmidt isn't about to complain. Apple users may be disappointed after the biggest news out of Monday's Apple developers conference was new Web browser software for Windows. But the move is only Apple's latest thrust into software that Microsoft fought bitterly to control in the late 1990s.

Google's Privacy Data Liberalization Activated

Google will keep your search for 18 months

Faced with criticism from privacy activists and questions from the European Union, Google announced Tuesday that it would cut back on how long it keeps the Web search histories of users, to 18 months from 24.

Search information will now be made anonymous after a year and a half, the company said in a letter addressed to an EU privacy watchdog, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party, and posted on the company's Web site.

The information, which is gathered every time a user searches the Internet using Google, gives information about the searcher's tastes and interests. Google shares general information on search trends, but says it does not release this personal information outside the company.

"We believe we can still address our legitimate interests in security, innovation and anti-fraud efforts with this shorter period," Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel, wrote in the letter, adding that the company would "firmly reject" a retention period that was any shorter.

Google Killers ? What is this Funda ?

In April 2002, The New York Times anointed Google "the king of search." It's impossible to argue with that today. Google, which is headquartered in Mountain View, California, conducts 48 per cent of all online searches in the United States, compared with Yahoo's 28 per cent.

And although Google's sales growth has slowed ever so slightly, it is beyond impressive for a company that is already huge. In the most recent quarter, Google reported revenue of $3.2 billion, a 67 per cent increase over the same period in the prior year.

Yet despite Google's dominance, there are dozens of companies working to bring new search tools to market. Last year alone, 68 search-oriented firms raised venture capital, according to VentureOne, and countless others have been self-funded or backed by angel investors. Yahoo and other members of the old guard are also showing signs of life.

Banned Organization ULFA using Orkut !!

Its a great way to use Social Media Marketing or Community Sites for virtually "Any" purpose now! Don't believe me ?
Check out the news in which ULFA is utilizing the potential of India's biggest Social / Community Portal Orkut...

According to DNA news,

The banned ULFA is using the internet to attract sympathisers for its cause, with the popular networking site Orkut being used for the purpose.

ULFA is already known to be techno-savvy, with its mouthpiece 'Freedom' updated on internet and its statements to the media routed through email. It is now suspected to be targeting the techno-savvy new generation and the people living outside the state, including NRIs, through forums on Orkut.

There are more than 20 Orkut communities related to Assam, which in some way or the other are a platform to discuss issues of militancy in the region. Though most forums are platforms for constructive discussions, at least a couple of them propagate a 'sovereignty' campaign and are sympathetic to the cause of the militants.

It seems now everyone is grabbing its share of the www and not the only Search Optimizers or webmasters, time to see the future :)

India China IT competition Status

Infosys Chief Mentor N R Narayana Murthy said on Monday that though India was 20 years ahead of China in the Information Technology (IT) sector, Beijing was fast catching up with India in the sector by focussing more on education.

Addressing the induction ceremony of the company's InStep Programme in which over 125 candidates were selected among the 12,000 global aspirants here, Murthy said China was growing well in the IT sector giving better focus on education programmes which were fit for other other nations to emulate.

Though China had done extremely well in the manufacturing sector and created over 130 to 140 million jobs, it lagged India in software sector. However, China had extraordinary quality to overcome the gap and surge ahead in this sector also, Murthy replied to an internee from Beijing.

Google Invading users privacy?

According to Privacy International, Internet users concerned about prying eyes following their online lives would be dismayed to learn that Google records all search results from its Toolbar search service, and is able to individually identify all users and track their Internet use.

In a report issued over the weekend, California-based Google, which has thrived on its image of enlightened management, is ranked worst for invading privacy.

The company is also accused of retaining information about people who use its services, even after they have deleted their accounts.

And Google can acquire additional personal information - including everything from what a user's hobbies are to where he or she works - through its networking service, Orkut. "Throughout our research we have found numerous deficiencies and hostilities in Google's approach to privacy," said Privacy International.

India: Internet Stats : Facts : Cyber Cafes : 2007

According to World Internet Stats, while 29% browsers surf on the English board, as many as 15% prefer to do so in Chinese.
India’s great internet dream which sank the hopes and dollars of hundreds of ambitious dotcoms in the early 2000s could finally be turning into reality.
More than half of Indians who access the internet reside not in the metros but outside India’s eight largest cities, or in other words, in Tier II and III cities. This changing scenario not only reflects the pace of internet and telecom penetration in the country but also the huge opportunity that exists for marketers across non-metros.
So, when online research & advisory firm JuxtConsult ‘India Online 2007’ surveyed 10,000 offline households in 31 cities countrywide, it reflected sharply on the online behaviour of Indians. In a two-part series, ET presents the big picture.
Internet penetration is steadily making inroads into the hinterland and getting broader in its socio-economic manifestation (SEC). If 66% users came from SEC ‘A’ and ‘B’ classes in 2006, only 56% come from these classes now. Internet is no more child’s play. Perhaps that explains why the internet user-age is getting broadbased.
If the 19-35 year age groups accounted for 76% users last year, they now constitute only 67%. Also, more and more users are logging on virtually cutting across various disciplines and backgrounds. There are only 17% internet users in this country who come from an IT background as against 21% a year ago.

Yahoo CEO Salary worries shareholders

According to Mercury News,

At least two independent proxy advisory firms are urging Yahoo shareholders to protest Chief Executive Terry Semel's $71 million pay package with a symbolic vote against the re-election of three members of the board of directors who are responsible for executive pay.

Yahoo's annual shareholders meeting will be held Tuesday.

Last week, Institutional Shareholder Services noted that Semel is one of the highest-paid CEOs in America, despite a slowdown in Yahoo's revenue growth in 2006 and a 60 percent decline in net income compared with 2005. Yahoo's stock also fell 35 percent in 2006.

"It appears that CEO Semel is rewarded when times are good ... and when times are bad," ISS said. Separately, Proxy Governance said Semel's pay is more than 900 percent above the median paid to CEOs at peer companies like eBay or Electronic Arts.

Internet Safety for children

Internet Saftety for Kids and Online Users in US

A news reporting for internet security concerns said:

Turns out that in the middle of May, Joe Lieberman, Barack Obama, Ted "Tubes" Stevens, and 15 other U.S. senators got together to warn the country that the Internet is very dangerous. Mostly they were worried about the children. Eighty percent of kids in the U.S. spend more than an hour online each week, they pointed out. That's quite scary, because "there are more than 1,000,000,000 Internet users worldwide" -- meaning there has to be a weirdo in there somewhere. What's more, the senators say, "61 percent of students admit to using the Internet unsafely or inappropriately," 20 percent have had real-life meetings with folks they first met online, and at least a third of our kids possess "the skill to circumvent Internet filter software." And 41 percent of parents feel that their "ability to monitor and shelter their children from inappropriate material on the Internet is limited."

Dedicated IP and SEO

Do search engines prefer Dedicated Ips to rank higher than shared IP hosted sites?

What is a dedicated IP ?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address dedicated to a single website.
The IP is reserved for that website only and its not shared to host any other webpages. Using a Dedicated IP , a domain can be accessed without even worrying about the availability of DNS domain name.

What is a shared IP ?
Web Hosting multiple domains on shared IP is possible via creating virtual directories or sub-domains on domain names and shared IPs. This is common form of hosting where many hosting providers allot the same IP number to multiple sites creating virtual directories for each one on the shared space and redirecting the domains using DNS.

According to Google Engineer Matt Cutt's blog:

I hear that there was recently a discussion on a NANOG (North American Network Operators Group) email list about virtual hosting vs. dedicated IP addresses. They were commenting on the misconception that having multiple sites hosted on the same IP address will in some way affect the PageRanks of those sites. There is no PageRank difference whatsoever between these two cases (virtual hosting vs. a dedicated IP). Someone on the email discussion already dug out this Slashdot interview from mid-2003 with Craig Silverstein, Google’s Director of Technology. I refer to question 5, in which someone asked

Why in this day and age does google continue to penalize sites that are virtual hosted? With ip addresses becoming harder to get/justify every day why does google discount the relevance of links that don’t come from a unique ip address. Please don’t just deny it, I think the Internet community deserves an explanation.

Craig’s reply was as follows:

I can’t just deny it? What are my other choices? :) Actually, Google handles virtually hosted domains and their links just the same as domains on unique IP addresses. If your ISP does virtual hosting correctly, you’ll never see a difference between the two cases. We do see a small percentage of ISPs every month that misconfigure their virtual hosting, which might account for this persistent misperception–thanks for giving me the chance to dispel a myth!

I’m happy to affirm that this statement which was true in 2003 is still true now. Links to virtually hosted domains are treated the same as links to domains on dedicated IP addresses.

How Sponsored links can be dangerous ?

Are sponsored search links risky ?

Let me tell you what is the sponsored link first ::

According to Wikipedia
Sponsored links
are text-based advertisements that describe an advertiser’s Web site and the products and services offered.

Typically charged on a per-click basis, when Web surfers click on an advertisement and visit the advertiser site, charges are made on a pre-determined amount that the advertiser has agreed to pay. The prices of sponsored links are usually set through a bidding system, where higher bids (along with other factors including performance, etc.) result in more prominent placement.

So are they risky ? Well read the story and you decide :

Clicking on a search engine's results of popular computer terms like "wallpaper" or "screensaver" remains a fairly risky endeavor when it comes to security, according to an updated study.

The second annual State of Search Engine Safety report from McAfee Inc. , found that roughly 4 percent of the most popular search results link to "risky" Web sites. That's a broad category of online pages that can offer Web searchers more than they bargained for. The results were a marginal improvement over last year's data, which pegged the level of risky search results at 5 percent.

The results are less troubling than those McAfee released this time last year, when risky sites accounted for 8.5 percent of all sponsored ad results for the most popular search terms. The company attributes the improvement largely to Google's "improvements in paid search safety."

How to Make Money From a Website ?

A .com stands for commerce in practical sense.
It means if you have a website , more probably you want to earn, in general essence of business.

Million dollar Question is , How to achieve that?

Two options for you :
1. Using Affiliate Programs:

Affiliate marketing is a method of promoting web businesses (merchants/advertisers) in which an affiliate (publisher) is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber, customer, and/or sale provided through his/her efforts.

Affiliate marketing is also the name of the industry where a number of different types of companies and individuals are performing this form of internet marketing, including affiliate networks, affiliate management companies and in-house affiliate managers, specialized 3rd party vendors and various types of affiliates/publishers who utilize a number of different methods to advertise the products and services of their merchant/advertiser partners.

Affiliate marketing overlaps with other internet marketing methods to some degree, because affiliates are using the same methods as most of the merchants themselves do. Those methods include organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, email marketing and to some degree display advertising. More on Wikipedia

2. Showing Ads : Using Third Party Banner Ads

How to Earn money via web advertising
Pay-Per-Impressions (PPI)
Here in PPI, you get paid on the basis of number of impressions (pageviews) of the specified ad/banner - the advertisement - on your web page. More the impressions more you get.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Here in PPc, you get paid only for the clicks made on the advertisement shown on your web page. More the clicks more you get. Now a days intelligent online advertising shows relevant ads as per your page content, atlease Google Adsense does so for web publishers.

Pay-Per-Lead (PPL)
A practical approach to Return On Investment ( ROI) where you get paid once the lead is generated, say by filling up a form or filling up a survey for the advertiser. Costs higher than PPI and PPC models but more success oriented.

Pay-Per-Call (PPCall)
Similar to PPL, here in Pay-Per-Call approach is to get the Return On Investment ( ROI) when the advertiser gets a call from the visitor or who-ever is interested. Costs higher than all of the above models but more success oriented and if you are into a business of precious things and want to have a record of the phone number, this is the most suitable way.More the calls more you get. But tracking is little bit hard here as phones may directly go the advertiser.

Choose the best option that suits you, do let me know your experiences , all the best !!
