Top article submission directories : under utilized SEO tool

One important and less used website promotion tool is incoming links via submissions in article directories.

When I say submission, it DOES NOT mean you should stuff anything in the world as article to any site. Before submitting to any website / directory/ article collection source, check the relevance of category, reputation of the site and the quality of your content.

If you think you are just submitting with eyes closed, that will do more harm than help, as same articles on 100's of sites can place it in supplementary results and there is nothing new to offer to the user.

Verizon Vs. Cybersquatters : Intellectual Property Case

Domain name booking and cyber-squatting is a creating a new legal problem as the web has crossed any country's limit.

Keeping the legal control over the un-lawful activities over the web, most of the countries are modifying the IT laws including India, US and the European union.

Here is a recent IPR (intellectual Property Rights) case of domain name booking by cybersquatters against the popular telecom service Verizon and the trademarks registered by the company.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is taking it to cybersquatters, and the telecom said it has been awarded $33.2 million from a company trying to intentionally confuse Web users.

The ruling, which the telecom said is the largest-ever cybersquatting judgment, said OnlineNIC "unlawfully registered at least 663 domain names that were either identical or confusingly similar to Verizon's trademarks." The telecom was awarded $50,000 per domain name, which included the likes of iphonefromverizon.com and treoverizon.com.

OnlineNIC is a San Francisco-based domain registrar, and no representatives showed up to court. The company also faces similar lawsuits from Microsoft and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO)

I would suggest to check the brand names and trademarks before you register a domain and avoid committing such activities.

Serious Security flaw in Microsoft IE 7

So far Firefox (FF) is considered as a secure browser, here is one more feather in the cap of FF.

Adding to the security woes, CNN reports a serious vulnerability in Microsoft IE.

Here is the news:

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Users of Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Internet Explorer Web browser could be open to attacks from criminals hoping to glean passwords and financial information as the software giant works to fix a security flaw.

"Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer," said the company in a release on its Web site.

The attack on Internet Explorer differs from many in the past that were successful only when users downloaded attachments that could exploit security cracks in the browser. In this case, victims' computers could be taken over simply by going to an infected Web site.

"This type of attack has been happening for a while, what's new is the unpatched IE tips off and draws attention that this sort of attack is working," said Cross Research analyst Richard Williams. "Ordinarily, by the time the news hits, the flaw has been fixed."

Microsoft said it is only aware of attacks on the Windows Internet Explorer 7 version of the browser, though all versions of the world's most popular program for surfing the Web are potentially vulnerable.

Google has just published the top keywords for the month. Interesting to see that top searches on google are prominently search engines and email providers. This leads to conclude that in India, internet is still used for search and email purpose for most of it.

The rising searches include web 2.0 awarness of video chat and messaging. Considering the recent terror attack on Mumbai , news websites are mostly searched for the updates and chat / messengers to convey and discuss things.


When checked for the SEO ( Search Engine Optimization) term awarness, there is still a lot of scope. In practical many people working in IT companies under technology and consulting dont know the meaning and the profile. So dont be surprised if someone compares an SEO with the CEO of a company ;)

Doorway pages and search engine ranking

What are doorway pages?

These are dynamically generated pages depending upon the user's search, mostly used to fool the search engines by spam.

Wikipedia's definition about doorway pages:

Doorway pages are web pages that are created for spamdexing, this is, for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending visitors to a different page. They are also known as bridge pages, portal pages, zebra pages (a humorous arbitrary coinage by Jill Whalen of High Rankings Advisor), jump pages, gateway pages, entry pages and by other names. Doorway pages that redirect visitors without their knowledge use some form of cloaking.

How do search engines deal with them?

Doorway pages / orphan pages are generally used to cheat the search engines, showing that there are static pages on the site , while they are actually created on the fly and are not static pages.

Search engines currently don't have much defense, they are still learning, but they do put such pages in secondary index as most of the data is common and also take action if reported as spam.

Does it help to increase ranking ?

This is a myth that doorway pages help in ranking of a site.
Reasons:
1. You will not get the link benefit as these pages are not at all connected to other pages.
2. These pages are hardly indexed
3. This is a spamming technique which will ruin your complete site if found by search engines.

Moral of the story is : Keep away from spamming and give quality content to the visitors from a long term perspective.

Cheating via Google Tools

There are some sites, my friends are getting many references with the messages like " earn online", " no investment required" , "work from home", earn X amount of money per day, X person got a flat via online earning .

I would like to convey my view on such sites.
Not essentially every site is a fraud saying all these stuff, but the user has to decide on its own with conscience and logic.

One case recently came to my notice:

The site is offering a work from home opportunity and showing the dreams to earn a lot without "any" efforts. Those who are not quite aware of the Google's webmaster tools and Google's options for webmasters and publishers such as Google Adwords ( for advertisers) and Google Adsense ( for website owners / webmasters) are possible targets to fall in to the trap.

The dreams which start "twist" the data - facts to show what they want to.
For example one site says, you get a site from us, then you will get a code from Google, you have to put that code in your site, you will earn per click ( minimum 5 to 200 Rs.), Google will send you a big cheque every month and this is all without any effort !!

Well some of the things are true here, of course like the model of adsense is explained without naming the Google property. Although its suspicious how much one can earn ( Rs. 5 is definately not a minimum) and there are website owners who have earned 50 Rs. for a complete year!!

My advise as a responsible netizen to those who are in search of quick money, wake up, see the world in the practical light.

Indian and Pakistani hackers have once again taken politics to the web, hacking and defacing web sites in the two countries.

A group believed to be composed of Indian hackers took control of the Web site of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Ratlam, a government-run school in Madhya Pradesh state of North India, after the site was hacked by a pro-Pakistani group.

The Indian hackers left a message on the web site for the site owner, stating that the site had been hacked by Pakistani hackers, but is now under the control of Indian hackers. The message also advised the site owner to fix the site.

India and Pakistan have a long feud over the disputed territory of Kashmir which is partially under Indian control. This dispute has spilled over into online communities, Web sites, discussion groups, and social networking sites like Google's Orkut.

The Press Trust of India, a news agency in India, reported Wednesday that a number of government-run Web sites in India and Pakistan had been defaced since mid-November, as hackers from both countries try to score points.

Ruth Kedar could have been a rich woman today. Ten years ago at Stanford University, two students asked her to create logo for their new company.

In 2003 April, Google tested its SafeSearch porn filter but the results were not as accurate as expected.
How did it worked?Google did exclude the porn / objectable sites via link analysis and will not display the content and the even the site, no matter you did visit the site or not.
In October 2005, Google did test the "similar page filter" or "duplicate content filter" whatever you find suitable, the major change it has created was if a page trigger a duplicate content filter during the SERP ( Search Engine Result Page) ranking, some observed all the pages of the particular site, go in duplicate data /index.
The latest in the Filter tool saga is Google's Orkut Content Filter, here the funda is to automatically screen and mark unsafe, mature content which may not be safe for the users, preventing Orkut from a potentially unsafe future.
How does it work?
Well you have to do nothing to start the filter, it will be ON by default if you are visiting from India.
All the objectionable material including pics, data, text etc will be marked as unsafe and will be placed along with a warning signal.
Google owned Youtube is showing a welcome message today mentioning a new filter well this is a " Suggested Country Filter".

Now this filter is all about setting your country (gathered as per your IP, to my understanding) and expected to help in finding more of the country-specific videos, it can still be changed to Worldwide.
